Fantastic Rooftop on Serif & The Line Hotel

San Francisco, CA

On a triangular block in downtown San Francisco sits the new Serif and The Line Hotel’s mixed-use, residential, and hotel building, where three districts meet - the Tenderloin, South of Market, and Union Square. The historic Warfield Theater shares the block with this triangularly shaped 12-story building. It holds an extensive outdoor rooftop, and we were thrilled when Handel specified many of Tournesol’s products to elevate the design.

When the design and conception of this building’s new facade began, Handel Architects, LLC, was challenged by the irregularly shaped, triangular building, and the masonry and context of the surrounding structures. They wanted the façade to keep the look and feel of the neighborhood yet modernize it and maintain an urban, contemporary design.

Most of the building’s rooftop space is arranged with custom Kitsap Modular Metal Planter Walls. Kitsap comprises modular steel metal planter walls that bolt together allowing a vast range of planter options to sculpt space. In addition, they chose to finish the Kitsap walls in weathering steel (steel that rusts but maintains its structural strength). The custom Kitsap walls were designed with curved areas to encompass firepits, angles, and lengthy linear runs - some at 130’ L and 36” H.

Our Wally Collection wood benches and platform seating were mounted along the sides of specific Kitsap wall planters - the longest of the four benches at 28’. Handel also chose many sizes of our made-to-order, rectangular Wilshire Collection planters, our most popular and versatile planter. Also added were our Urban Collection square and round planters. Both Wilshire and Urban, fabricated in lightweight FRP, were finished in our Smooth texture and standard color Puddle.

The rooftop is an enjoyable outdoor area for the residents and the guests of the hotel to gather for community-building, small spaces for privacy, and the entire roof deck with views of downtown San Francisco, Market Street, the San Francisco Bay, and other districts.
